Questions people ask
How do byes work in a tournament bracket?
A bracket needs 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 slots. With a number in between, the empty slots are byes, and they go to the top seeds: in a 10-team bracket of 16, seeds 1 to 6 skip the first round and start in round 2.
How many games are in a single elimination tournament?
One fewer than the number of teams, because every game knocks exactly one team out and all but the champion go out once: 7 games for 8 teams, 15 for 16. Byes are not games.
How does double elimination work?
A team is out after two losses. A first loss drops a team into the losers bracket, where it keeps playing; the winners-bracket champion then meets the losers-bracket champion in the grand final. If the losers-bracket team wins it, both have one loss, so a second final decides it.
How many games are in a double elimination tournament?
Two fewer than twice the number of teams (2n - 2), plus one more if the grand final needs a rematch. For 8 teams that is 14 games, or 15.
