iCalendar
The internet standard (RFC 5545) that defines how calendar data is written and exchanged.
iCalendar is the specification behind ICS files and feeds. It defines how events, timezones, recurrence rules, and metadata are encoded so that any compliant app (Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook, and hundreds more) can read the same data.
Despite the similar name, iCalendar is not an Apple product; Apple Calendar, formerly iCal, merely implements it. When a tool says it exports to iCal format, it means an iCalendar ICS file.
