How to share one event with only some people on a shared calendar
Open the event, choose Only some people under Who can see it, and pick who. Everyone else on the calendar will not see it at all.
A shared family calendar usually has several people on it, and not everything on it is for all of them. A haircut, a doctor's appointment, a surprise party for one of the people on the calendar: you want it on the same calendar, just not visible to everyone.
Open the event (or create a new one) and find Who can see it, directly under the calendar it is on. It starts on Everyone on this calendar, which is how every event behaves unless you change it.
Choose Only some people. Nobody is selected at first, so you start from a blank slate and add the one or two people who should see it. Tap a name again to remove them, or Clear everyone to start over.
You are never in the list, because you always see your own events. If you pick nobody at all, the event is yours alone.
Save. The event shows a small padlock so you can tell at a glance which events are limited. Everyone else on the calendar sees nothing there at all: no title, no blocked-out time, no hint that anything is hidden.
To undo it, open the event again and choose Everyone on this calendar.
Who can still see a limited event
Only you and the people you picked. That is true even of the person who owns the calendar: if someone else set the calendar up and shared it with you, they do not see your limited events on it either. That is deliberate, because the calendar's owner is often exactly the person an event is being kept from.
You can only pick from people who are already on the calendar. Adding someone to an event never gives them access they did not already have, so an event's audience can only narrow the calendar's, never widen it. If you later remove someone from the calendar entirely, they drop off every event you had shared with them, with nothing to clean up.
Do limited events show up on share links and calendar subscriptions?
No. A public share page and an ICS feed are a link, not a person, so they cannot tell who is opening them. Limited events are left out of both, along with the group's public site.
One consequence worth knowing: that includes your own subscription. If you have added your TangoHive calendar to Apple Calendar or Google Calendar as a feed, your limited events will not appear there. You will see them in TangoHive on the web.
Is this the same as a private event in Google Calendar?
It is the thing people usually want from that setting and rarely get. Google's Private visibility hides the details from some people while still showing a busy block, and what others see depends on the permission level they were given on the calendar.
In TangoHive you choose the actual people, by name, one event at a time, and everyone else sees nothing at all rather than a blocked-out slot that invites the question.
Can I do this in the iPhone app?
Not yet. The app knows which events are limited and shows them correctly, so nothing leaks, but choosing who can see an event is on the website for now.
